βLast year I did a Second-Hand Christmas and it was honestly the most creative one yet.
We swapped homemade gift vouchers, re-gifted books, and found treasures on Marketplace. I found so many unique and antique gifts that really resonated with my family and friends, and saved over $500.
And it felt so much more meaningful than a consumeristic season!β

Why it matters
Every Christmas, New Zealanders spend billions on new gifts, decorations, and wrapping β most of which ends up in landfill before the next season rolls around.
If everyone lived like we do in Aotearoa, we’d need at least 2 more earths to keep up with all the stuff we buy.
All our discarded stuff has to go somewhere. Each year, Kiwis produce ~3.2 tonnes of waste each, making us one of the OECD’s top waste producers with only 35% recycled or reused – one of the lowest rates among developed nations.
π The exciting part? π
Choosing second-hand, homemade, or regifted presents instead of new ones has a massive impact.
For example:
Buying just 1kg of clothes second-hand, instead of new, saves 11 kg of COβ emissions β thatβs like driving 50 km less!
Imagine the impact if the whole world went with no new stuff!
